Sponsor a Teacher

HOPE for Ariang Foundation’s mission is to provide inclusive access to educational opportunities for South Sudanese citizens, with a special emphasis on women and girls. The education statistics in South Sudan are quite sobering, with more than half of all school age children not in school. In addition, South Sudan has just recently been named by the One campaign as the toughest country in the world for a girl to receive an education. HOPE for Ariang is committed to Ariang Primary School and helping each student reach his or her full human potential.

Throughout South Sudan, there is a shortage of qualified teachers. The majority of teachers have no formal teacher training and hold a secondary school certificate. HOPE for Ariang believes that when there is quality instruction taking place in the classroom, then students are much more likely to succeed academically. Qualified teachers lead to a more conducive learning environment, student-oriented learning, and positive school growth.

At Ariang Primary School, our challenges are similar. All teachers are local residents of the community. Among the eighteen teachers, only six have completed secondary school. The head teacher is the only one to have taken some government sponsored pedagogical training in 2015. After renewed conflict in 2016, the program was ended abruptly.

Our Goal: HOPE for Ariang will invest in our local teachers through on-going teacher training and coaching program.

Our teacher training program will consist of:

1. Teacher Institute

  • Teachers will participate in intensive teaching courses during school holidays and breaks. They will have opportunities to learn from leading African educators, observe exemplary teaching in action, and strengthen their content knowledge.

2. On-going Coaching

  • A Coaching Mentor will provide one-on-one support to Ariang teachers in the classroom. The Coach will use a variety of tools to observe the teachers, set personal goals, and guide teachers in personal teaching reflection.

Your financial support will help us to implement Ariang Teacher Training fully, starting in 2018. A gift of just $100 will help cover training expenses for one teacher.
